Cucumbi Farm

Cucumbi Farm

A journey through the vast fields of the precious Alentejo region

until you reach Cucumbi,

is the perfect place for what will be an

unforgettable experience at our side.

Our farm is located in the village of Barrancão, in the municipailty of Alcácer do Sal and its history goes back to the last century when, during the time of the Agrarian Reform, the lands were distributed and occupied by the resident population. The property was, then, an Agricultural Production Unit where the local people worked, managed, and distributed the goods they produced, due to this being a place of high historical and sentimental worth to the locals.

My dad and Isabel acquired this property about 18 years ago, over which they have tried to maintain it on an organic regime. Unfortunately, their jobs consumed most of their time and, in 2018, they decided to sell the property.

Tozé had a dream – dedicate himself fully to agriculture – and here he saw an opportunity to fulfil it by buying this piece of land that he was always so fond of. He convinced me to embark in this journey, and with the help of our dear friend Fernando Oliveira and the incredible aesthetic vision of Sofia Albuquerque, Cucumbi was born…

We changed our lives, escaped the city, with a desire to delve and taste this magnificent piece of nature – a conscious return to simplicity.

We await your visit!

We look forward to your visit!

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR A PEACEFUL STAY

We want you to fell at home from the first moment (or the first reservation).

Before we get to know each other live and colours, we share some details of what makes Cucumbi the best place to rest in Alentejo.

All water is recycled and reused

Here, the environment is an everyday priority. Focusing on water consumption, we have flow reducing systems and water recycling. Be it when opening the tap, watering the plants, or diving in the pool, management of water resources is on the first line. In a rural tourism regime, specially, in a region such as Alentejo, all drops count.

Disposable plastic stays out

When Cucumbi was still a project we were sure: whatever it took, we would not use disposable plastic in the hotel. We dreamt and we delivered. Food and hygiene products arrive to us in plastic free packages and, when possible, are produced by us. In every space, all decoration details are minimalist and use natural materials such as wood, wicker, cork, cotton and linen.

Products that are used and sold in the store are organic and eco-friendly

Both in food as well as in hygiene, we privilege organic and eco-friendly products. Even better if these are produced with the property’s resources or within our region. Moreover, on the shelves of our store you can find artisanal soap, wicker baskets, cloth bags, wooden spoons, ceramics crafts, and much more. As such, to the shared moments, you can have a memory of Cucumbi to take for the return.

Meals are vegetarian

Who resists a delicious, home-like, healthy meal? To eat well and without a rush is one of the small pleasures you’ll (re)discover at Cucumbi. From breakfast to dinner, all that arrives at the table is as much as possible seasonal, local and organic. All the meals are vegetarian, with several vegan options as well. The fertile land of Cucumbi concedes us the pleasure of serving freshly picked products from the farm, as well as the vegetables, seasonal fruit or our organic happy chickens eggs.

The experience changes with the seasons

From food to activities, life in the farm changes with the season. For being so in harmony with the countryside, there is always something different to do, learn or discover all year. We design our theme programs, bearing in mind the earth’s calendar. For instance, we can watch the sheering of the sheep during Spring, catch fruits in the Summer, get firewood in the Autumn, or help take care of the greenhouse in the Winter.

Animals are part of the family

We belong to that group of humans that cannot live without the company of their precious animal friends. The dogs, Ginja and Tangerina, cats Romã and Cebolinha, the chickens, the sheep, our dear donkeys…every animal takes their quiet like in the farm and love to meet our guests. They are part of the big family that makes Cucumbi, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

And there is much more to discover on the surroundings.

The best way to breath this pure air of Alentejo and enjoy its unique piece is exploring. Less then half an hour away from Cucumbi, the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo rises with impunity upon the hill. On the opposite direction, towards the Sado river, we find one of the oldest cities in Europe: Alcácer do Sal. For the fans of typical Alentejo gastronomy, a mandatory stop is due in “O Chouriço”, in the town of São Cristovão.

Now that Cucumbi is presented, the only part missing is knowing our next visitors.

We are here to answer every question, and, of course, welcome you upon arrival.
